    Default Silky Oak Coffee Table

    Hi all,

I just put the finishing touches on this last night. It is made from one piece of Silky Oak, from a tree that was grown and milled right here in Canberra which is unusual. The legs are mitred, the frame is done with simple but attractive lap joints, and the top was one slab which I docked in half, ripped a square edge on each half and then biscuit joined together.

It's the fourth coffee table I've made and the first in this style. I'm very happy with how my skills and patience are coming along, I'm starting to reap the rewards now.

It's such a beautiful soft timber, my machines were grateful as to this point they've spent their lives flattening, thicknessing and cutting exclusively hard hardwoods to make end grain cutting boards. This was a walk in the park in comparison.

    Cheers,

    Putty.

I'm with you Putty, love working with silky oak - easy on the blades and the grain can be stunning. Owen

Spectacular timber, and you've done a fantastic job with it

Whats the finish on the top?

    Cheers

Hey mate thanks so much for your kind words. The finish is several coats of Organoil Olde Style Danish Oil. It really brings out the character!
