    Default Silky Oak Desk

I work from home quite often and spend a fair bit of time on the computer, so it was time for a new desk.

Silky Oak from one of Boutique Timbers auctions in a previous year. I found what I bought at the auctions hit or miss in middle of the packs, this pack of silky oak was a hit, some fairly nice figured timber. I was a bit short of thicker boards, so the top has wider, more figured boards at the front where you see it and narrower at the back under the monitor and speakers etc.

The latest 'approved style' for our house is simple with shadow lines under the top and I like it, simple to build but a little bit of character and not having overlapping tops shows off the rest of the piece more.

Joinery is dominos with flat floating panels. Finish is Organoil Tung Oil.

Chair is a Steelcase Leap, great chairs!

Nice job, you really can't go wrong with Silky Oak can you.
Some details on the joinery used would be of interest.

Thanks aldav, legs, stiles and rails are laminated from the thiner stock, top and floating panels have dominos for alignment, frame is all held together with pairs of dominos in each joint, top corners reinforced with a screwed in bracing block.

The top I tried to use Z clips for the first time, not a smart idea with the shadow line as I had to shim them to get more depth. I’ll probably go back to wooden blocks in a grove on the rails next time.

That's a beautiful piece of work, glad you managed to get enough boards from the pack.

Thanks Greg, yeah silky oak was really good, a quilted red cedar slab became a bar and was excellent, a decking pack had a lot of borer holes in the middle and wasted a lot, some of the blue gum I got had borer holes as well. Blue Gum I’ll work around, just increases waste a bit.

I’ve had it sitting for a few years since I got it so its nice and dry at least

Perhaps future auctions should have the packs open for better inspection?

It's a bit hard with around 200 strapped lots, difficult to move around if loose, but we'll see, I try to ensure the top board is a sample of the pack.
Anyway hope to see you there on 15th September.
    Regards
    Greg
