I wasn't happy with the width of the top rails, so I charged them to 104mm rather than 86mm. That way I can shape them and get a nice even margin between the top rail and the legOberon Bed__08.JPG I was recutting the mortice on the underside of the headboard and managed to forget to make the allowance for the shoulders, dill!!Oberon Bed__07.JPG As a result I have patched it so that I can do it again, must need the practice. LOL.

My bench is not that big and I was having difficulty clamping the top rails so that the grooves could be routed. I had a couple of pieces of nylon that are 20mm thick so I thought I would make up some bench dogs that I can use on my table saw.Oberon Bed__01.JPGOberon Bed__02.JPGOberon Bed__03.JPGOberon Bed_.JPG I made 2 of each type which effectively enable me to secure stuff and still have full access to the top face. They work a treat!!

The groove on the underside of the top rail is on a fair angle off 90 deg.Oberon Bed__10.JPG This is the jig I made to enable that to happen accuratly.Oberon Bed__05.JPGOberon Bed__06.JPG Of course the angle on the footboard top rail is different isn't it!! So I made one for each.

This is something else I have been up to in the last couple of days.Letter opener__20.JPG Bookmarks made from old casement windaws that would have otherwise gone in the bin. Made about 25 in Silky Oak and about 20 from some really deep red, old red cedar.

    Cheers

    More progress today.

Laid out the slat material to roughly work out the colours for the 4 panels.

    oberon bed_20130208_002.JPG
I trim cut one end to facilitate marking them to keep them in order.

    oberon bed_20130208_012.JPG

Then proceeded to run the slats for the footboard over the jointer again and through the thicknesser.

There are only 4 slats each side of the footboard which I figured would be easier to tackle first. At least then if I stuff it up I still have the headboard material to try again.

The finished thickness is about 10.5 mm. Checked the required width, ensuring that I took into account the length of the tenon. 753 was the number with a 5 mm tenon in the 6mm curved mortice. Checked again, happy with that so I cut them to length.

I used the off cuts to sneak up on the lap joints in the panels. The rebate on the inside of the curve needed to be a bit over a mil deeper to allow the panel to take the curve. Also, the lap on the outside of the curve needed to be angled away from square to allow the panels to come together.

Happy with the test pieces so I ran the material and ended up with this.

Not glued up yet. Ran out of time to do the last of the machining for the top and bottom rebate. But I am quite happy with the results so far. Hopefully the weather will be kind to me for the next day or two until I can get the panels restrained.

    Cheers

Final fit up of the right hand panel happened today. Ripped the top panel to the final width.

Created the tenon on the bottom panel and the top panel.

Trimmed the rebates to get the expansion allowance i wanted as well as improve the fit from panel to panel.

Then I committed to the glue up. This was done in situ within the dry assembled frame.

Tomorrow I have to work for part of the day re fitting a panel lift garage door but I hope to be able to fit off and glue up the other side.

Starting to look like something now. Very satisfying. The final assembly will be challenging but doable.

Got the second panel glued up late yesterday which pleases me no end.

Today I started working on the slats for the headboard so I thought I would take some more detailed pics of the jigs I am using showing them in service.

    oberon bed_20130213_092.jpg

Straight on shot of the stand offs showing how they are not resting on the table but are instead more or less aligned with the centre line of the ply.

Side shot showing the relationship between the standoffs, the ply jig and the material to be machined.

Top view and three views of the machined outside curve. The inside curve is done with the same process but with a mirror image jig.

    Curved tenons machined.

Tomorrow I will cut the lap joints and the top tenon that engages in the top rail.

I put a couple of slats into the frame to see what the fit is like.

    I'm a happy chappy.

I'll post a couple of shots of the footboard panels tomorrow after I run the hand plane over them to clean them up.

    Cheers

Here are some shots of the head and footboard panels. Hand planed, sanded and with one coat of finish on them
    .oberon bed_20130221_108.JPGoberon bed_20130221_105.JPGoberon bed_20130221_102.JPGoberon bed_20130221_98.JPGoberon bed_20130221_95.JPGoberon bed_20130221_90.JPG

Another coat of finish goes on today. I'll then rest them for a couple of days to allow the finish to harden then give them a buff.

The joins are nice and tight and I am really pleased with the result so far.

The next challenge is shaping the top boards to match the legs. I want to end up with a reveal of about 2 - 3 mm. Should be able to start on that later on today.

    Cheers

Default Starting to look like something now. Woopee!!!!

Here is the footboard dry assembled. I am now able to mark out the top boards for the shaping required to match the legs. I love it when a plan comes together, but I am not quite there yet. Very very close though.

    Cheers

    Further to the last post.

Here is the headboard dry assembled with the panels in place ready to mark out the top rail shape as per the footboard.

The panels have had 2 coats of finish now. I will be able to give them a bit of a buff on Monday.

I'm also pretty happy with the book matching of the panels. The grain patterns and colour runs from left to right and matched up and down as well. Looks good I reckon.
