Sooty Mould on Silky Oak
Hello
I made a garden bench from Silky Oak and used Organoil Garden Finish as the preservative. In 2 months the bench was black. I washed the bench with Wattyl wood wash and gave the bench 2 more coats of Organoil. The bench is now black. The tech at Organoil said the problem was sooty ash. I have a timber pool deck and fence posts and don't get this problem. Any ideas on what is going on? I live in a rural area.
Many thanks
Hereward
NB My sister has a 40 year old Teak seat in her London garden. No problems with sooty mould.

Any oil based finish when mixed with moisture will grow mould.
Up here in the wet tropics the only way to stop painted doors from growing mould is to use a water based enamel paint.
The Teak seat in London most likely doesn't have an oil based finish on it.
Try some sample pieces with a few sample finishes, you can get a water based PU now & there is also an epoxy based clear finish for boats.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.
