    That would have been a great option Ian - certainly better than the ladder I had, which was top of the range for the mob that sell them here (i've got it for sale on ebay at the moment). Out of curiosity, are they readily available in Australia?

    They were available, at least in Sydney, when we installed our attic ladder about 15 years ago

    Wooden step ladders are typical of what I'm thinking, the legs are braced with a thin timber strip from top to btm or such.

    As you want to leave it open I would suggest 1/4" or 6mm rod, (or wire rope) it needs to be fixed at the top end of one stringer and then fixed to the opposite stringer at halfway then back to the end of the original stringer, do this twice so you will end up with 2 diamond shaped crosses on the back of the stairs, ideally if you can put tension into these rods you will make it quite ridgid, I did this with my bandsaw track, some pics...
