The solid timber ARC dovetailed drawers are long since delivered (and very gratefully received!) but I decided to trial resawing thin veneers for future reference.

.... and I’m very happy with the result and so wouldn’t hesitate to design any future project around veneered (probably) plywood. In fact, I am considering making the bases of the chairs for the SURPRISE PROJECT out of forest red gum veneered ply to keep the weight down?
However, the project will now be delayed for a couple of months until I return.

I’m finally back on to the job! The plan is to hand it over before the end of the school year and so I need to extract the digit? There has been a not-so-subtle change with the plan though. I have confided with a few insiders at the school and the most likely way it will be used requires only 2 matching chairs so my burden is considerably lightened!
Today I made up a jig to accurately cut the laminated curved pieces...

..... with both the length and angle being critical. I also milled some of the remaining slabs, dressed the straight pieces for the chair splat and drilled the dowel holes.......

    What storm?
    We would of had 3 drops on an old broad sheet newspaper in 3 minutes;
enough to down tools and call it a wet weather day in the old BLF days.
Good to see you back enjoying some shed time Alan.
    Cheers Peter

I’ve been silly busy for weeks now including recovering from a major dust collector issue but work on the SURPRISE PROJECT has continued apace!
The ‘gate’ backs of the chairs were assembled but the design required the outside faces to be parallel to the chair axis so the solution, after a sleepless night, was to simply lay it on the saw bench and cut the outside faces with a ‘glue-line’ blade.

    9A353A5A-0CAB-4B68-BA64-719A6D08C341.jpg

The chair components were all cut from the saw-milled baulks, squared, dressed, cut to length and domino’d...

    8EE360E9-CB31-4818-8FDC-249B9AC58820.jpg

.... and the sub assemblies glued up ready for full assembly...

To get the cushion angle right, I used a cushion left over from the heirloom chair project.......

    7DABA611-5296-4D61-B91A-C2A4E396B3A4.jpg

.....and, although it was both too narrow and too long, it allowed me to confirm the placement of the back cushion support which should allow me to get rid of the 6 house bricks which, when added to the prodigious weight of the timber itself, made the chair immovable!
Over the next few days I will do the final assembly and start on the seat cushions.

BTW, for those wondering about the unusual (?) proportions of the chairs, I used ANZS;WPOCC (Australian/New Zealand Standard; White Plastic Outdoor Casual Chair) dimensions...

..... which fits wonderfully with my standard working practice of not using drawings?

I wasn’t going to mention you by name in case you got inundated by people needing your hidden talent/s?
I am hoping to use leaf green/olive green leather of which I have precisely NONE .... so a trip to ‘Minno’ is on the cards?

I got further than expected today and.......

    ........ Look Mum, NO BRICKS!

Both chairs are fully assembled and the first coat of WOP has been rubbed back. Once the glue has dried on the front aprons, I’ll fit plugs to the holes on the back legs and apply more WOP.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but Minno is no more. Closed last year. Birdsall in Botany is your best bet.
