Table rail dimensions
I’m making a dining room table 2100 x 1110 with a 40 mm table top.
Ive got 70 x 70 legs and I’m M and T joining the rails. The material I have for the rails is 70 x 25 but I’m concerned that this size may look a bit ‘thin’.
From a construction and design sense, has anyone got any thoughts on the thickness and depth of the rails?
Is 25mm stock too narrow for the tenon (9-10mm)? Will 70 mm be deep enough to complement the top thickness ?
Any ideas appreciated.

70x25 is coffee table size, dining table rails should be in the vicinity of 125x35 or thereabouts

For quality in one particular type I offer I use the same thickness in rail as the top . So the rails would be either From 25 , 38 or 50 to match tops made from that thickness . It works well and looks right that way. It can depend on table type as well . Depth over 110 starts bringing in problems . under 100 Starts looking skimpy . Over 110 can look good and you see it in plenty of tables of the 18th c . When that size though it’s harder to sit under and be comfy as well as having a top at right height .

Thanks for the advice, I agree that 70mm is a bit skimpy, hence my initial doubts. Back to the timber shop I go!

You are not alone. Many of us have struggled with the same question.
Agree with Auscab. On a table of that length I'd be looking at 100-110 mm depth and about 38 mm thickness. On one table I glued three boards of about 22 mm thickness together and re-sawed them down the middle to give me a board a tad over 30 mm thick. On another table rails of 100 mm depth were used, but they were only about 21 mm thick after dressing and the table was seven feet long (but the top was only about 20 mm thick). So, I glued a board about 20 mm thick and about 45 mm deep to the backs of the rails to add strength. Both methods worked a treat.
