    Default Timber for Table top

    Hei Guys,
I have a desk frame which I would like to re-use but the top is stuffed.

The span is 900mm deep by 1000 wide with supports 900 outer edge to outer edge. If I do this I would like to have an overhang of an extra 250mm on one side to sit a pc underneath.

For cost and ease of work I would probably use pine - I'm not sure 19mm would be enough, would 25mm be strong enough and where's the cheapest place in Perth to get it.
    Cheers
    Paul

19mm would be sufficient. Most desks are 19mm and with that span should have no problem with deflection.

Don't know the cheapest place in Perth, but likely to be Bunnings. However, you'll need to select fairly carefully as most of their pine has a lot of holes, knots, and cracks.

You may also find it's not much more expensive to use a hardwood. They usually sell meranti or other more durable wood and it's fairly inexpensive. Any decent lumber yard will have other relatively inexpensive options, like Tassie oak.

I'm even half tempted to go get some 4x2 jarrah from the demo yard - I have a power planner here so I could dress it easily enough.

If you have a bandsaw, you could resaw the 4x2 jarrah into lovely 19mm planks, join them up and have a first class desk that will look a thousand dollars.

Unfortunately I don't have a bandsaw, but I could probably do the resize with the power plane and then once joined hit it with 60grit to even it up.

Try Alwood timbers in Beckenham they seem to have a good selection of pine . Tell them what it for and they should come up with some good stuff . I would prefer the jarrah myself . Anyway i ishould be able to help you out if you need something flattening out as i have a slabbing machine it might make life easier for you .

You could also consider plywood, maybe framed in Jarrah for a nice contrast.
