    Default New Tool Chest

For some time now I have been wanting to build the Andy Rae inspired tool chest. Today I finished (almost) the base unit for the chest. The main pieces for the top have been cut but will have to go on hold for a while. The timber is rosewood and the handles are queen ebony. Finish is Feast Watson tung oil (not pure tung).Don't know when you will see the next instalment.GEDC0758.JPGGEDC0762.JPG(Sorry about the format. The old A/A problem again)

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Working on the top at the moment. Bit slow going as I have found a few hurdles to jump. Will say more on this when I have finished the unit. With the school holidays coming up and the grandkids arriving things will slow down.

As mentioned earlier, the grandkids are here, so I will give an update as to where I am at with the top.

The first image is of the two side panels being dry fitted. The next image is of the frame being clamped up so that front measurements can be checked. There are no front rails to hold the front open. This is done by the top, bottom, and middle shelf all which use a sliding dovetail for connection.

The side panels are then oiled prior to being installed in the frame. The next image shows all of the components ready for glue up Used Titebond III here as it provides more open time. Next image is of the clamp up with the following image showing the back being installed.

The last image is the top sitting on the bottom case. Still a lot of work to be done - the middle drawers (about 21), the lower drawer in the top, dividers, and the doors.

Will have to make another run up to Mal for some more rosewood. Have just about run out. So will be a couple of weeks before I can get back into it.

Slow progress for a number of reasons. Since the last post I have all the stock prepared for the top doors. The case to hold the internal drawers is now complete and sitting in the cabinet. The first image is a dry fit of the case, while the next one shows it in place. It will be removed again to insert the bottom dividers from the rear. Will move on to the doors next as the sanding strip for the drum sander broke and I can't find the spare and I need it for the dividers. In my haste I cut them to near size before putting them through the thicknesser for final size.

Another step closer. The dividers are now installed and given a finish. The bases/sliders have been cut and sitting waiting for their drawers to be fitted. The drawer sides have all been prepared, as have the drawer fronts. All going well tomorrow the backs will be cut and the drawers assembled.

I am thinking of coming out of retirement. I am sure that I had more time when I was working.

Well I underestimated the time required to get the drawers done. Not sure if I had my time over again that I would do them this way. Too late now though. Still have a couple more coats of FW Tung Oil to go. Then it will be on to the top doors.

Should have included a photo of the drawers. The top shelf is not really curved.

Bob you have done a great job the last shot is what I'd call a dovetail teaser just enough showing to make us ask for more.

So whats with that shelf even in the full photo it looks a tad bowed?

First the shelf. Came in close with the lens and looking down slightly on the drawers - has distorted the image.

Nothing fancy with fitting the drawer sides to the front. Used sliding dovetails here as the sides meet the front in from the edge.
