    Default Murphy Bed

    Good morning
Can anyone make comments on building a Murphy bed from a kit
To buy the finished product is way too expensive, the kit is about $270 buying online and the plans $6
They suggest making it from mdf or ply,i would think that mdf would be very, very heavy
    Thanks in advance

Never built a Murphy bed but would favor ply over mdf for building most things. Not just weight but general durability too.

Occasional use bed that you want out of the way most of the time, or a pull down bed for (almost) daily use. Reason for asking is that there are also designs around for 'bed in a box' systems where the entire bed folds away into a box/cabinet at floor level, and extends horizontally to form the bed when required. Not as practical for daily opening and closing, but the weight is always directly on the floor, not pivoting on two points and needing gas struts or counterweights etc. No hardware kit to buy, uses standard hinges and bed brackets etc.

Re materials, I would opt for ply over MDF for strength and crush resistance etc personally. If you opt for ply, it might pay you to look at Maxiplywood's web site, they have a great range of material and are good to deal with. Based in Lilydale.

Please do a WIP if you end up building one. I have one on my todo list which is very long. Would be interested in gaining from your experience of the project.
