    Default WIP first dining table

    Hi all,

Attempting my first table - all going well... so far. Making table from Oregon and Baltic. Keeping it rustic. Have put the rails and legs together and completed the top.
For attaching the top to the legs, was planning on using L-brackets. But I have a dilemma... do I need a support rail in the middle? The table is about 1m x 2m and 40mm think. Any advice on to have or not to have??

    Cheers

    Nick

IMHO the preferred way to attach the top would be to use buttons so as to allow for the seasonal movement of the top. If you had a center rail you would able to place buttons on it as well, but with a 40mm thick top the center rail would not be needed just to support the top.
Looking forward to some pics when finished.

Thanks Peter. Thanks for the reply. You will have to excuse my ignorance when it comes to wordworking termonolgy. What is IMHO and what are buttons?

I had seen on another members pics that they used batons with slots (this would also save me an extra trip to Bunnings). I guess this could be a subsitute for buttons??

Quick reply during my lunch. Will post pics shortly.

Wot groeneaj said . Here is an Acronym Dictionary which is what IMHO is called. The guys on the Forums use them quite often so you might find it handy.

Adding a support rail in the middle is a good idea I think. Its not a difficult thing to do and it's function is to keep the side rails from moving and to add a bit of rigidity to the frame. You can also use it as an extra location to secure the table top to.
