WIP Hannah's Chest 1747
Well I'm stepping up to the plate to have a go at this and using hand inlay tools for the inlay. I know it's not that big for the BIG Stuff sub forum but it will get lost in the general forum, perhaps we need a WIP sub forum, now that's an idea. For forumites that have followed my WIP projects before you will know I don't work quick but I do the job, anyhow I have a fulltime job so I only manage a few hours in the workshop each week. Enjoy

I see a lot of lookers but no one pulling up a seat yet. Maybe some more WIP will help. The chest is being made from silky oak with red cedar inlay. Pic one, two and four are of the main chest dry assembly with dove tails and pic three is the lid being glue up.

I am watching. I just do not know how to "pull up the proverbial seat" yet.

Hi guys, here is some more work and I must say things are moving on a bit this week. A friend of mine turned the feet for me as I don't do turning yet. I draw out the design on the pannels and I started to cut a line or two but have not put in any inlay yet, that will be next before I cut some grooves. Soon to start on some draws, Enjoy.

Hi SB. Just wondering about photo 4. Does that show a couple of grooves have been cut for the inlay? If so, how did you cut the grooves and what is that mysterious looking gadget?
Regards PeterThe time we enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

Yes, photo 4 does show a groove cut into the lid in the design where a contrasting wood will be inlayed. The mysterious looking gadget is a Lie Nielsen compass radius groove cutter. I'm using both Veritas and Lie Nielsen inlay line and berry tools as I plan to submit a review to AWR after I complete the project, what better way to review both inlay tools by doing an actual project.

Hi Opelblues2, nice to see you find a seat, is it in the cheap stalls section? Yes, all the inlay grooves will be cut by hand, a very intense long process with one slip and it's all for nothing so slowly slowly does it. I'm using the Steve Latta's methods in his DVD of which I would recommend if you want to go down this track.

I've done some inlay work on the Lid and Side of the chest and what a learning curve it is. I think it has come out OK and I'm encouraged to keep going as I quite like the process of inlay work, it is soothing to the mind. Enjoy.

A Caboolture lad making a box from silky oak and red cedar... very appropriate.
Yep, watching and wishing someone would drop over some lamingtons.

Not much done today but I finished the berry inlay on the front and sides and lid with a sand. The berries are Red Gum as I thought the fruit of the plant is a different colour. I also made the base and case floor from Qld maple with book joins ready for the case glue up and putting on the feet next week. Apart from the inlay for the draws to go, that's the end of the inlay of the case and I must say it has gone better than I thought it might, just goes to show if you really want to do it you can.Enjoy.
