I remember an Australian Red Cedar table top that had several patches that became apparent after the top was stripped for a restoration job. The thing had been so skillfully French polished that the patches were absolutely undetecable.

I should have just filled all the holes with black epoxy, would have looked spectacularly distressed

Just been to see my father-in-law to pick it up.
It seems its not just too tall, but a bit big for their lounge and liking.

Right now I am weighing up the options, trim this one down, or sell it and start from scratch?

It would seem a waste to cut it down, but its more of a waste for the table to sit in the spare room and not be used

I could throw it on Trademe (nz version of Ebay), flick it on for a couple of hundred bucks. Better than a kick in the pants

    Not sure.

Right now im going to start stripping boards ready for my next project, my bedroom suite.
I've been promising to do it, and now the wife has got catalogues out looking at nasty Phillipine's pine creations from the bargain furniture stores.

If I dont show her some progress, she will buy it and make me cry

Ok, im on to the finishing now.

I found a buyer, and he wanted it oiled, so i'm finishing with Briwax Danish oil.
First coat on and dry now.

I had a new crack appear after it spent 2-3 days sitting in my station wagon in the sun, undergoing some extreme temperature changes .
A few pocket hole screws and a bit of glue and it should be right as rain.
Ah the joys of using old timber

Colour is nice, albeit a bit darker than hoped, but thats the oil finish.

    Cheers
    Dave

Nice to see the finish item and now you are back on par to make one for the in-laws.

    Thanks Peter,
Yep, rimu can move quite a lot.
Even these old barge boards , which are probably older than me, moved a heap once the paint came off them, and more once they went through the thicknesser

One leg is 5mm longer than the others to compensate for the racking in the laminated top

    All done

4 coats of Danish oil, and now its sitting in the spare room curing for a week until it goes to its new home.

Now I can really get into my next project
