Just out of interest how much did you pay for it and what parts came with it?

I got it for $1000, it's three phase, ex-school, it was basically complete except the tailstock clamp was missing and one knob off the belt tension lever was missing and no thread dial indicator or other accessories, it also came with a TOS 3 Jaw chuck, no outside jaws.

I brought it sight-unseen (I was overseas), so I took a chance. Have just finished disassembly, cleaning and re-assembly, will post pics shortly.

I have set the change gears correctly spaced and it is quite noisy when feeding towards the headstock, in the reverse direction however it is very quite. I didn't get a chance to get into trouble shooting, but I suspect the stud gear shaft / mount is a bit chewed out in the direction of normal feed (probably no lubrication).

A lot of the machine had some significant stains / grunge. I found the white scotch brite to be great at getting this off without being to severe on the paint.

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing here or not,but I would think if the Stud Shaft was worn you would get the same noise result in forward or reverse.

You will at times notice that the change gears will be quieter in reverse due to slight wear on the gear teeth in the forward direction,the noise can also be increased if there is not sufficient clearance between the gears.

my guess is tumbler gear or shaft is suss
but could be wrong

tumbler gear shaft have a wick in the oil hole which quite often is blocked up so no lube getting to the shaft possible shaft or gear worn
