Maybe not good to drench the wick in water/caustic, if you want it to transfer oil later.
Why not remove all wicks, and replace them with new ones later?
Or just scrape off the old paint? Should replace wicks anyway.

Wouldnt you be better off dissmantling the apron first to seperate all the parts.

Be careful with paint stripper. It can penetrate into the porous filler that was used to patch imperfections in the castings. The stripper will then slowly leach out such affected filler, and new paint may forewer bubble and lift off any areas above it.
You are better off using mechanical means to remove old paint.

You better dismantle the apron before stripping paint. Otherwise you saturate the wicks with paint stripper, causing over time corrosion of all surfaces in contact with such wick.

I intend to remove all paint and filler and have done so.
I would not dream of trying to strip a part that was not dissembled.
I will post some photos when I can.
I removed all components and sent the bed to Hercus for a regrind.
I do not like Vista Green so a total repaint is in order.(Inside too!)
So one component at a time to avoid loss (and confusion)
I have read with interest opinions on colour (and seen some shockers!)
I will stay with popular consensis and use a machinery colour.

I have just finished painting and about to document (take a picture !)
the assembly.
I sent the bed and saddle to Hercus for a regrind. They arrived back this week and have been painted.
So watch this space or I will start a new thread and post the pictures etc

Pleased to hear that the restoration is back on track. We will all be interested to hear how the bed regrind went, cost, etc. Will Hercus also regrind the 9" lathe bed. They surely must be similar.
