9"c upgrade
hi. im getting tired of changing back gears every time i would like to change my feed rate.
i think i want to buy and fit a quick change gear box. in my mind i would just buy one. probably from amwh. make a simple modification to the lead screw and thats it.
now ive been informed that a lead screw and a model lead apron would be the way to go.
so this bumps the price up a far bit. im not so worried about having cross slide power feed. but wold like the upgrade to go smoothly
has any body out there done this up grade?

If you dont get an A leadscrew it wont matter as long as you modify the C screw.
You will still need to engage the Half nuts for Feed and Screwing.
In my opinion if the price is right get the box with the screw, just saves a bit of mucking around and you still retain the C screw if you wish to change back.
An other thing you may wish to do is interchange the Stud gear.
On an A model you have a 20/40 gear for the Stud,a 56 on the Screw and a 80 bossed Idler.
If you configure the Change gears as per the Standard layout,20,80and 56 you may find that your feed rate maybe a little high.
I normally to keep my feed a little lower than stated on the Q/C box is to change the 20 stud for a 16 stud when feeding,(YOU MUST REMEMBER TO CHANGE IT BACK TO THE 20 FOR THREADING).
The reason why I change it is because with the A Saddle there is a reduction through the Clutch,if you havent got the A saddle attached to the C this reduction is missing, meaning that the Carriage will feed faster than stated on the Q/C.

thanks pipe clay. i was told you were the one to speak to. im starting to see the advantage of a. a modal apron. less wear on the half nuts .ect. what sort of modification would be required to my c lead screw if i went that way? is it just cutting a groove?

The end of the Screw shaft would need to be modified to suit the Q/C box and the Keyway would need to be cut.
I wouldnt be to concerned about wear on the 1/2 nuts.
I have used a few A's and I find that having to disengauge the starwheel to halt feed to be a pain,I find that disengauging the 1/2 nuts much easier and reliable.

If you get in touch with BITZA500 who lives in Croydon VIC he can show you the physical difference between the two leadscrews.
