    Default adapted gearbox

    I just thought it's interesting that a 9" Sheraton gearbox fits a Hercus 260:

Yes they fit as well as the 9'' box on a 260.
The only difference between the Sheraton and the Hercus is 1 TPI/Feed.

That's good to know. On my Hercus 9A the leadscrew thrusts are taken up at the gearbox, whereas the 260 has it at the right end bearing. So, you'd need to take that into account when getting parts for a conversion/upgrade (that is, the correct leadscrew and bearing as well as the gearbox would be needed, I think?).

There are slight mods that need to be performed.

    Default gearbox

The one offered on ebay was a conversion from a metric machine to imperial, which involves changing over the leadscrew, rear leadscrew mounting bracket, gearbox, apron, crosslide and compound spindles, nuts and dials. As most of the old parts have a certain resale value on ebay.
The Sheraton leadscrew is 2" longer than the Hercus so would need to be turned down. The same conversion would be simpler used Hercus 9" parts which will bolt straight on I believe.
I'll try setting one up if anyone is interested in the conversion. My apologies to the purest's.
