    Default Very interesting

Wow all interesting and informative stuff!

Understand, tough steels require the carbide tooling (indexed or otherwise). How do you know what type of steel you are dealing with? For example, assume you wish to modify a radius rod on a car or an axel, how can you tell the type of steel u are dealing with (putting aside any common sense or expected knowledge), is there some form of telltale I should be looking for?

    Cheers

At a pinch I would say due to high stresses with such a part that it would be a grade of High Tensile.
There is a spark test that you can do to try and work out what the material maybe or how hard it may be.
If you search this forum for spark test you should find some information, other wise try google.
