Default Endmills and Facecuter for Hercus Mill

    Hi,

I've been doing some work with my Hercus mill and decided that I will eventually need to get some new cutters (something a little bigger than my 10mm endmill). I'm thinking something like this:

MT3 M12 Arbor Indexable Face Milling Cutter 25mm END MILL Inserts | eBay

MT3 Shank 50mm Face MILL Cutter APMT1604 Carbide Insert | eBay

    1pcs 4FLUTE 400R 50mm 22 Face END MILL SET 10pcs APMT1604 Carbide Inserts | eBay

But not really sure with the little mill. Anyone have any advice, suggestions or opinions? I'm all ears. At the moment I'm really only working with aluminium but will do some work with steel eventually.

    Thanks Ben.

I went through this exercise in detail, & came to the conclusion that the Hercus O Mill does not have enough grunt & cutter speed to use these carbide inserts effectively.
These carbide inserted cutters have zero or negative back rake designed for high speed work.
I have tried a one inch dia version & had to use back gear to get enough torque out of the machine, & at that speed it was not effective.
Have had better results with a 3/4" dia 4 flute high speed end mill cutter or a high speed fly cutter, ground with a little back rake. both perform well on machining cast iron & mild steel. They would handle aluminium easily with long cutter life.
Anorak Bob, in Perth has also done trials & assisted me. He may add to what I have had to say.
    regards
    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the reply. I read some of Harold Hall's "The Milling Machine" today and some other publications and have came to much the same conclusion. I'll start looking for flycutters and a larger HSS endmill. There's a indexible carbide endmill at work which I may try but from memory it's a 20mm shank (too big for me to hold).

    Cheers Ben.

    Ben,

I made a cast iron bracket a while back when I only had my No.O. I used an 8 flute 1/12" endmill for some of the job. The mill struggled while trying to cut with the flutes

I do have a multi tooth indexable carbide face mill but I have only ever used it on the 2 hp 13. I have only used it a couple of times, the first was on some 4140 steel and I was disappointed with the finish. The second time was on some brass and the finish was superb.

When I used to use the Hercus, the largest cutters I used on a regular basis were those with 5/8" and 16mm shanks. They matched the small Autolock's largest collets. The snapshot below shows the 1" shanked endmill in an intermediate Autolock chuck. A bit too big for the little mill. All the cutters I used then and use now with the exception of the above mentioned facemill, are high speed steel and English.

    Bob.

    Thanks Fellas,

I think you saved me some dollars on unnecessary tooling. I'll head out to Mick Moyles one weekend or the local markets and keep my eye out for a larger endmill.
