Fair Price for Hercus 9" model A 6692
Hello,
This might seem a bit odd.
I have a chance to buy a Hercus model A 9" lathe.
I know nothing about metalwork but would like to learn, a friend who is a fitter has inspected the lathe and tells me it is in good order.
The people arent terribly sure about what price to ask so I promised to start this thread. I've given them this web site address and told them that if I dont buy it somebody else on the forum could be interested if its out of my price range.
Hercus Model A 9" machine no 6692 is stamped on the plate.
Comes with various cutters, well maintained but not used much recently - owned previously by a very diligent and enthusiastic metalworker.
Can anyone advise on what I should offer or do we need to supply more information ?
I will leave it up to the current owner to login and introduce himself and his lathe, I promised to start the thread.

Any where from $600 to $1500.
If some photos could be put up it may make a guess a little easier.
Things that may detract from the high range of price would be
Flat Belt Drive
Plain Bearing Headstock
Non Camlock Tailstock
Lack of Change gears
No drive Plate
No Face Plate
No Fixed or Travelling Steady
Lantern Tool Post rather than a 4 way post
No fixed or live centre for Tailstock
No reverse jaws for a 3 jaw chuck if required.
No 4 jaw chuck
No drill Chuck
All these things could cause the price to drop, most but not all would normally come with a high priced 9A.
There are other additional extras that may already be present with the lathe which could possibly increase its value

Extras
It has got an oil pump is that a necessity or a bonus ? and a big white board behind it with a light and the oil tank and the on off forward/backward switch.
Am currently reading all I can find in order to become a little more informed, I suspect that this might be a very good lathe but simply do not have the appropriate knowledge to assess or report it properly.

For the age the machine is unless it has a can with tap and a mounting bracket attached to the rear of the carriage it is not original.
Coolant on the lathe in my opinion is a bonus.
The white board is an add on.
As said if either yourself or the seller can post photos of the lathe and any associated items that go with, this will help to judge its worth.

From the photos it looks ok, would be good to know what is in the cabinet to the right of the 2nd photo.
If you could get a photo of what's in the cabinet it would help.
Is the coolant a gravity feed off the rear wall or is that some type of reservoir.
I suppose as it stands and from the photos around the $1000 mark would be reasonable, could be higher depending on what's in the cabinet.
This guess at a price is based more so on the fact that you had someone look at it and they said it was okay, and not knowing exactly what or how they checked things.
At the end of the day even if something was wrong and needed repair or replacement most parts are available.
