    Default back gear broken tooth

    Hi

My ( 9 hercus / sheraton ) back gear had a broken tooth . I built up a new tooth with weld and hand filed it to shape, this repair has lasted 3 years but it has broken again .

I am thinking of tapping holes into the broken tooth base and then screwing in a couple of small studs, then brazing around the studs to build it up , then re cut the new shape with a proper gear cutter .

Can somebody tell me the correct PA of the tooth , and what size gear cutter I need to buy ? Mike

Should you be working out what is causing the breakage first.

Did it break due to a bad repair?

Did it break due to operator error?

Is some thing not meshing correctly?

Did it break whilst in use or when removing/fitting a chuck etc.

Replacing the damaged area with steel could possibly transfer the cause somewhere else.

    Cutters are 16DP.
    PA is 20 degrees
    Cutters required No2 and No5.

THANKS FOR THE gear cutter info

The tooth broke again because of my less than ideal repair job.

The repaired tooth was not meshing as it should have been, because my filing job was not the correct involute shape .

    regards ......... Mike
