    Default Gears for Hercus 260ATM

    Hi,

Been playing with the lathe a little bit today and believe I don't have all of the original gears for it.

Wondering if anyone knows what gears I should have?

On my screw gear I have a 60 tooth and a 45 tooth gear.

The idler gear (i think that's the correct name) is a 80 tooth gear.

And I haven't checked the stud gears - which I have two of.

I also tried putting the 60tooth screw gear on and it won't fit with the 80 tooth idler gear. I guess I need a smaller idler gear?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks Ben.

I think this info would be listed in a search but just incase its not.
You will have an 18,45,60 and 80 idler as standard.
If you feel you need a different size idler they can be made or possably found, cost if it had to be made would be aroung $120 to $150.

Hi Ben , It is the 18 and 45 that change positions to change the feeds.
    Cheers from Micheal.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the replies.

I seem to have all the right gears then.

I'm still not sure what your supposed to do if you want to put the 60 tooth screw gear on though? It definitely won't fit when the 80 tooth idler gear is on.

    Any ideas?
    Ben

Just read Pipeclays reply. I'm a dumba** sometimes... Thanks Ben

Do you have any gears at all conected in the geartrain at the moment. What I mean by this is if you turn the lathe on and have the spindle rotating does the gear conected to the reverse tumblers turn, the reverse tumblers are the two gears that sit directly below the gear teeth on the spindle.

The reverse tumblers drive a gear attacched directly underneath them.

This gear is conected to a short keyed shaft that has room on the end of it for another gear.

This gear is called the stud gear.In the case of the 260atm this will be either an 18 tooth gear or 45 tooth gear.

The gear that goes on this shaft will dictate the feed or pitch the quick change gearbox will cut when the selected settings are made.

From the stud gear of 18 or 45 teeth this will conect with the 80 tooth idler. The idler is only to fill the gap between the stud and screw gears,it could be any size as it plays no part in the feed settings.

From the stud to the idler drive is transmitted to the screw gear which is a 60 tooth gear.

As standard the setup would be 18 stud 80 idler driving the 60 with the 45 filling the space on the screw shaft,a small spacer with keyway could be made to fit in place of the 45.Normally the 45 or 18 if not being used would stay on the screw shaft so as not to be missplaced.

When the 45 tooth gear is used the idler would need to be repositioned on the banjo bracket,it is good practice to use the adjustment of the idler on the banjo to set backlash clearances in the geartrain,if there is not sufficent clearance the gear noise can sometimes be quite loud.

    Thanks PC & Locale,

I think I should be ok. Didn't even thinks of loosening the banjo. A picture says a thousand words.

    Cheers Ben.

Did you purchase this lathe from AMWH,if so ask them to give you some instruction on how it works.
Good luck with your thread cutting.

    Hi,

Purchased my Hercus from tissuescars on ebay. Mal has had a look at it, and I'm sure he said I was missing a gear but not sure. I've nearly finished my army apprenticeship and bought the lathe on a whim (hoping to keep/gain some machining skills). I enjoy playing around on it but the age and gears take some getting use to.

    Ben
ps It sure sucks the money out of my pocket!
