    Default hercus bar lathe project

Hello all... im a newby to the forum recently i bought an old hercus? bar bed lathe from around the 1930s amongst other issues it has a broken headstock rear bearing housing bout just back from the oil well how do i fix it? do i risk having it welded and will preheating the headstock/casting cause other issues ie other hidden stresses to be revealed considering its age of 90 odd years or do i pin and plate thread it etc... it is a shame but its a nice peice of Aussie history that i would like to restore any thoughts from members would be appreciated and anyone with a similar lathe or parts of one or any other info i would love to hear from ya humbolt

not sure about welding it if its 90 years old the casting would be very well seasoned lol i have heard of machining the old housing off or half way down and making a new "bridge" to be re-bored but that would ruin the authenticity and condition of it as a historical machine if thats importaint

maybe it could be pinned and re-bolted on
    happy turning

    Default bar lathe

thankyou i figured that the age of the metal could be an issue i will pin and plate it i think and perhaps use some JB weld to take up the imperfections in the plate let you know what happens regards Wayneó

Hi Humbolt, have you thought of having it welded with Stainless steel arc welding rods,

As I have welded many a top compound that has been battle scarred from hitting the chuck

The only problem is the weld after finishing is hard and has to be ground back with a grinder ,but I have wellded plenty of cast iron with Stainless steel and so far have not had any problem

On the other side does you bar lathe have a serial number and any chance of a photo sent to me ??

all the best derek aka bitza500
