Default Spec savers, here I come

Well I'll be pickled on both sides, I didn't realize the serial No was stamped on the data plate. It's definitely not on the end of the bed unless it's filled in with grime.

I had all the info on my lathe stored on another computer that went to god, looks like not all data was recovered.

In any case Mal, I'll be putting my hand up for a new imperial gearbox plate, when they are done. I presume you will be supplying the spiral rivets to suit.

I reckon you'll have orders for hundreds of plates.

    Cheers,

    Ken

ps, can someone re post the list of Hercus serial Nos vs year of manufacture, I've lost that list also

    Hello Mal,

On the topic of dates, do you know in which year the AR was introduced?

I am not really that knowledgable with the Hercus models but if you need photos of name plates and anything else drop me a PM of exactly what you want, I have acess to a Craftsman (Think it is an A but not sure) and six others that I think are mostly 260's with maybe another craftsman thrown in. In good condition as within school workshop. Happy to setup a camera and tripod and take as many potos as needed to get a good images.

    Bob.
The earliest machine in my database is 1962, as that is from a list of 10% of 21000 odd machines made, it's probably pretty close. However I'd be happy to be proved wrong if someone has better info. There is an earlier one on the woody register but I assume it's a rebuild or a mistake as it's around 1945. To everyone else who is interested, the bigger the sample number, the more accurate the information derived from it, so please keep the machine numbers coming. If you see one somewhere, get it's number and let me know. Many hands make light work!!!!

    Default change date

I now know that Hercus changed the plates between machine nos 9453 in 1964 and 9610 very early in 1965, if anyone can place it any closer let me know. If you're not sure what I'm talking about see Bob's earlier post on this thread and checkout the change in wording.

Got the first plate for you Mal, if it is one you want let me know and I will clean it up and take a decent picture. All numbers match on this machine, it and it's partner in crime a Douglas shaver are my favourite two machines at work at the moment.

That's interesting, I thought the "B" and "C" plates would be the same as they could use the same gearing, with the exception the clutch feed on the "B". I assumed they would use the half nuts to drive the feedrate as is done on the "C" (which of course you can also do) but they have added a section on the plate for clutch feed instead with a completely different diagrams 1-4.
If you look at the attached plate you'll see the difference. May as well get me a good photo if you can.

It's a Craftsman if that makes any difference or are all "U" descriptors craftsman?

I did notice the "CU" . I would still have assumed they would keep the same arrangement with them, am I missing something thats different in the gear train. How about a couple of close up photos of the gear arrangement when you get a chance, I've only seen the "AU" model. As far as I know the "U" only applies to the craftsman. By the way if they ever decide to get rid of one I'd love to add one to the collection.

Hey burnsie, no ones perfect and as you will discover I make plenty of mistakes, all I can do is blame it on old age.

Not a problem, I thought maybe I had missed something as I said earlier, my Hercus knowledge is pretty much limited to being able to turn it on

    Hi Mal,
Attached are pictures of the gearbox plate from my 9" imperial Model A #8696 and the matching metric conversion chart. The machine was sold new to the University of Melbourne, probably in 1962 or '3 so the plate may be one you are searching for.
