Hercus lettering system
Anyone out there know what the letter N stands for on the Hercus 260
Its got ATMHN stamped on it and the N is the only letter that i dont know what it means or represents
It also seems to have an unusually high top speed of 2650rpm

The "N" stands for instrument version according to one of their old brochures.I would presume this to be a lathe that had very tight tolerances.
Explanation of codes on the bottom of page 4.Cheers from Micheal.

Thanks Localele
I will appreciate it so much more, now that I know that such extra care went into its manufacture.
I so much love the older equipment and if deserved will go to great efforts to offer it a new lease on life
Cheers Tom.

Even without the "N" they are great little lathes and I have certainly learnt a lot from both the lathe and this Forum.
Post a few photos if you can Tom and a serial number so we can find out its vintage.Cheers from Micheal.

A few pictures of the 260
The higher speed seems to have been achieved by a reduction in the size of the pulley.

The serial number 16490 would suggest that manufacture occured about 1978 (the year I started my fitting apprenticeship) where I trained on a Colchester Triumph 2000 but the Hercus takes pride of place now. Tom

It is quite a change to the speed ranges as well.Going up by 30% and 57% roughly ,What speed is the motor?
I imagine it would have different bearings in the headstock for those ratings. A call to Hercus might get you some general info about the Instrument Version which you could share with us.Cheers from Micheal.
