Thread: Hercus Oil

Not really sure Mark but I use Teresso 68 in mine. It's what our bigger (newer) machinies at work call for. You really want to stay away from automotive oils tho.

I am about to get a mill and lathe I bought last summer going and the lathe comes without oil in it. Manuals for both recommend non-detergent oil that meets ISO 68. I think it is the same oil used in oil compressor crankcases too. I bought a 20 liter pail at an automotive/industrial supplier last weekend for $80 Canadian.

Is the Teresso 68 a type of Hydraulic oil, as I have 4 litres of valvoline ultramax 46 Hydraulic oil which Hare and Forbes suggested I use.
I was not sure about this oil so have not used it, I have been using a non detergent 30 weight engine oil instead.
What do you think and where do you buy the Teresso oil?

ISO 68 is a type of hydraulic oil. The first 2 links above are discussions on oils, 3rd is a Jet manual and it says ISO 68, and the last is to the Grizzly site in the States and if you go to the metal lathe section, the manuals for each of their machines calls for the same ISO 68 oil.

I've always used hydraulic oil and I know they use it on machine tools in industry.

It's been suggested on this forum that chainsaw bar oil is good for lubricating slide ways. Seems to be a good idea to me.

If you want to leave your lathe unattended for a prolonged time, hydraulic oil is not very good for preventing rust. It tends to flow over time.
