    Hi Derek
I noticed your forum when I was scouring ebay for a hercus. been a member for ages but this is my first communcation. I got left some money from my grandfather and decided to get something I've wanted for years (a Hercus like I used at School) and could keep and hand down to my son. Anyhow I found a guy at work with one and after pestering him for a couple months managed to pick it up for $950 plus a petrol powered mountain bike (I can build my own bike now) anyhow its a 9" A model serial no. A5528 and it has RGE or ROE in an oval stamped to the right of the serial no. The Tail stock has 7348 stamped on it at the rear. Does the saddle have a no.? It has the cupboard with a door on the left and an open shelf unit on the right. Custom made 4 way tool post and it needs the reverse switch reconnected as you have to reach over to the switch on the motor (after market motor with rocker switch) which is a bit dangerous. I'll sort that out with a contactor and start stop buttons for safety. Its in 30 year old condition daggy chipped pain, there is a tooth broken on the small end of the back gear and there are 3 teeth missing in different spots on the main gear that the small gear runs on (the one with the engage dog) will try and get fixed I have a freind who is a tool maker and he has welded up gears for me before with stainless TIG. Its in need of a coat of paint and a general tidy up. Currently its grey but I was going to do it green is that for newer machines? does anyone know of a paint name that is close to hercus green? Also is it a sin to paint it an unoriginal colour? I'll take some photos when I start putting it back together after the paint job. If anyone has a 3 jaw chuck they want to sell I'm looking for one as only have a 4 jaw [email protected]

    Thanks Darren

PS Forgot to add its a bush head and imperial shaft. It does have the gearbox

I heard the choice of green for machine tools was because pychologists found it tended to a less stressful work environment. Your friend's suggestions might cause rage?

I took a piece of original Hercus-painted lathe part to a proper paint shop. The bloke there mixed up a can to match.

    Default Welcome to the mob

Hi Darren congratulations as you are No130 on the Register, but I,m afraid the dirty grime is a little bit older as your lathe was built in 1956 so you have maybe a bit more gunk than you expected

The tailstock number is a common School fault as when I did my Apprenticeship back in the early 70's the tailstocks were always left on the floor

From Memory it was deemed safer to have on the floor than when unlocked and pushed back down the bed sometimes they tended to go off the rails and bang on the floor

The initials DGE should be in a oval near the bed number as for the rest of the lathe you only had on the gearbox and the Tailstock on Model A lathes, Model B & C were on the bed and the change gear cover

As for Colour you are walking into a minefield as every body has there own version of Green,From Hercus it was supposed to be Vista Green but depending on age as I have 7 in my garage and not 1 is the same colour

Like Pipeclay always says why paint it if it works ok which is true

But if you decide to to a complete rebuild close to restoration then it changes the situation

As my old 1954 is on it's 3 restore I decided to give the old darkish blue/grey a miss and paint it green

Yes Green is supposed to be more soothing to the eye as I was told during my trade as all the machines at work were all bought in 1948 and had only 2 lathes replaced of course green and this is how I was told it soothes the eye

I have just done a ground up rebuild on a 260ATM which I intend to sell ,so I took a part down and had it colour matched at a Auto paint shop

Then I went down to Bunnings had them zap the old Hercus 9" and 3 cans later got the colour, this is not the same colour of any 9" I have seen but was more trying to get a brushable epoxy rustproof paint that sticks well

There is no right or wrong when it comes down to your machine you paint it whatever colour you like as you have to look at the finished project

As for taking pictures start from when you strip it down as it will help in reassembling

As for the 3 jaw chuck I may have 1 shortly depending on what size you are after

    so let me know

    all the best Derek

I found it interesting that there are only 2 ARL machines

Hi AL, on the Register you are No 27 the ARL and No 35 as the AR or are you like me to many to count

    Hi Pipeclay
I've been told your the man to see regarding repairing gears I have a small end back gear with 2 teeth missing a bull gear which has quite a few bronze teeth allready and is currently missing 2 and the other end of the main shaft (the small gear that turns the big gear on the back shaft) is missing 3 in various places. Basically the only one thats not damaged is the big end of the back shaft. Interested in what it would cost to repair these. It s a 9 inch hercus 1956 according to Derek. Thanks Darren

If I was to do this repair all gear Teeth would be replaced.

I will NOT repair only some teeth.

The Small gear on the Backshaft would be replaced with a Cast Iron sleave.

The Bull gear would be replaced with a Steel ring gear.

The Cone gear would be replaced with a Steel ring gear.

The Prices for the above are Dependant on the Condition of the Bores and also the Condition of the Casting.

If the Condition of the above are good the costs would be,

    Small Backgear $55.00

    Bull Gear $77.00

    Cone Gear $65.00
    Plus postage,

I have increased my prices in the last 12 months due to the increase in the cost of materials.

I do this for the fun of it,its not my job.

You maybe able to source replacement parts either from Hercus,Southbend or Derek that might be cheaper than me.

I think there are other members on this Forum that Have also repaired Gears, they might also be able to do this for you at a cheaper price.

Dont think I dont want to do them but I allways tell people to search elsewhere to at least get an idea of prices.

Thanks for that I'll ask Derek I've been in contact with him a bit since I got this machine. I have 2 back gears so if I get you to do the job I'll send both and you can pick. I'll ask around and get it stripped down but that sounds reasonable for the ammount of work involved.

Anyone else out there with a bull gear cone gear or back gear shaft I'd be interested to hear from you (also a 3 jaw chuck)

    Thanks Darren

Well you can put me down for 20244 and 17012.

Be interesting to know when 20244 was made... I imagine it would have been near the end of the run in the 1990's..

    Hey Mal,

What is the chance of a new thread about the G with some detail photos? I've never seen one in the flesh and most probably never will.
