I would also be interested in a five inch backplate for a 260.

The 1 1/2 Inch, 8TPI backplate for the 9 Inch is a regular Southbend item available from multiple sources. (eg www.cdcdtools.com item 25453 - 5 Inch 8TPI USD $32)

The 1 3/4 Inch 8TPI for the 260 is much less commonly available.

Plus there is the situation that many of the 260's were metric with a 3 mm pitch leadscrew and incapable of cutting the imperial thread on the spindle nose without a metric to imperial thread cutting conversion kit. Very simple on an Imperial lathe with an 8TPI leadscrew.

Don't know if there would be much interest - but a faceplate might also be considered for the 260.

Have thought of the Face Plates but a blank piece with 1 3/4 x 8 TPI is about $85 without putting the radial groves,slots or machining the Backout

The back plates from o/s are a good price but unless you do a multi purchase the shipping would make them non competitive.
I am pretty sure that Hercus still supply back plates for there 260s,not sure about there 9s but seeing they are OEM there price should be pretty good.

Is it possible to remachine a faceplate for a 9 inch Hercus to fit a 260?

No real reason why you couldnt,the Plate will be smaller in diameter than standard but if the 9" suits your needs why not.

in the process of making the patterns for 170 mm back plate blanks caste locally ( local foundry did hercus parts in the past) will take at least 1.75 inch thread not sure of cost yet but as soon as its done ill let you know
preliminary estimates look very cost effective
