hercus t-slotted crosslide
Hi Guys,
I have been trying to find the funds to produce the t-slotted crosslide for both 9" and 260 lathes. In order to spend the amount of money required to produce moulds, press die (for the graduations) and the production machining, It would be helpful to know how many would be interested for about $280 roughly. I will proceed with the final costings if enough interest is shown in it's production.
Anyone who is interested please email your interest to me on the email below or call me on 0438466008.

Hi Guys,
I am modelling the design for the crosslide from the picture of 260 one shown thanks to Bruce "Abratool", obviously the 9" version will be of the same design with a lesser thickness in the body to give the correct centre height. The die for marking the graduations is complete and the casting pattern finished. Just wating on the final price for the castings before producing the prototype, which I will post a picture of when finished. The run will be limited by the orders that have been submitted so far, so let me know now if you're interested. Please email contact info to the email stated at the start of this thread.

I'd love one of these but suspect that just at the minute I should keep my limited cash reserves or a rainy day
If you have any left over Mal let me know.
Thx

dial test pressing
One more step almost completed. The test pressing of the dial seems like I'll get a decent result. I need a little more than the 80 ton press used to press the sample but getting very close, probably 100ton will do the job.

Is that a 100t press to put the dial on all at once (ie the full circle) Mal?
Impressive stuff.
I still want one
Thx

That looks good Mal.
Do you have a picture of the die? I bet there was a lot of work put into that, or was it CNC'd?
Cheers,

Hi Mal,
Impressive work.
I have a 260 slide on my ARL and it sits about 4mm higher than the standard 9" cross slide. I was under the impression that the original 9" extended slides were the same height as the later 260's.
This impression was based on a comment made by Peter Hercus in the 1970 edition of his " Text Book of Turning" where he says " the height of this slide is too great to accommodate the standard compound rest with the American Pattern tool holder. Instead a special compound rest is fitted carrying either a direct mounted square post or a rapid style tool block." (page 74).
So many times have I wished the slide was that bit lower and if you have made a version that suits the 9, well, 9 owners will have the best of both worlds. Fantastic!
BT who loves his rear tool post.

Hercus T-Slotted Crosslide
Hi Mal
I have just caught your offer in manufacturing same.
I have an old School Hercus 9" and am hoping that I am not too late to be in the ordering of one of these.
As I have difficulty with following up on these forum threads could you please send me an email to confirm either way.
Not sure if I need to put it here or you can get it from the forum (hopefully)
I guess I would like some sort of postage cost if poss.

Hi Bob,
Quite correct the wall between the bottom of the t-slots and the dovetail is one of the issues that need to be tested in the prototypes. With the slot size on the 260 sample slide there will be a reduction in the wall in the centre on the 9" between the bottom of the t-slots and the top of the dovetail, this should still be thick enough and supported well enough by the main body but I may have to give a little more by slightly reducing the t-slot on the 9" version and increasing the table height slightly.
I would like to keep the table height and slots the same if possible but it's too early to tell. The stress tests will soon tell me if there is a problem and I'll deal with it then.

Does anyone have, and/or can anyone upload, one or more photographs of an original T-slotted cross-slide for the 9" models ?

But different maybe? The gib screws appear closer to the bottom of the tee slots in the brochure image (could be a reflection??). Also the 260 slide has no cutaway for the graduated collar clearance. I commented about this in an old thread. I was going to modify mine but never did. The 260 boring table has been counterbored. A bit weird.

The more I look at the catalogue image the more I think it's a reflection. The two screws at the far end of the slide don't project that far in reality. The gib screw lock nut wouldn't be much deeper than a 1/4".
