Default Info requested re my Dad's Hercus Model 260ATL lathe

Greetings to all. This is my 1st post to this Web site.

My dad left me his virtually "in brand new" condition Hercus model 260ATL serial # ATL16168 lathe, which he purchased new in November 1977. I only saw him use it a couple of times. It is mounted on a metal cabinet. The lathe came with the following items:
    - Hercus inspection record
    - standard equipment, inch graduations
    - 1/2HP single phase 240V motor
    - extra long bed
    - long bed stand
    - 5" x 3 jaw chuck
    - 230mm face plate
    - 6" x 4 jaw independant chuck
    - 5" x 3 jaw self centreing chuck
    - stationary steady
    - travelling steady
    - V blocks
    - drill chuck
    - lots of large sized drill bits
    - precision dial gauge
    - dozens & dozens of cutting tools & bits
    - sundry other mysterious items
    - Hercus turning manual & spare parts book

The lathe has been stored covered in a dry shed for the last 15 or so years & besides some rust on the cabinet looks in excellent condition.

Whilst I haven't used a lathe since my school days in the 60s & I haven't a particular project identified requiring a lathe, I am reluctant to part with it since it was my Dad's & I know it is in virtually new condition.

So I have a couple of questions that you may be able to answer for me.

If I decide to keep it, what parts may I need to replace/repair to get it going? Perhaps a new electric motor & belts. What else, assuming it was in good working order before it was stored?

If I decide to sell it, what would be a fair asking price, apart from a case of beer & free transport to some lucky blokes work shed?

Thank you for your assistance with this request.

Price $1200 to $2500 + depending upon condition extras and the market.

If its been sitting for a long time maybe the belts but I doubt it.

Turn the spindle by hand to ensure that the bearings still turn.

If it turns put some oil in the oil ports 46 grade hydraulic or 68 will be ok.

Test run for 5 to 10 mins on high speed somewhere around 1600 rpm plus, see if you can hold you hand on the bearing housing,if its to hot to hold your hand there, there could be a problem ( use the back of your hand rather than the palm) warm is ok but hot is not good.

If thats ok then try the feed, you can try one lot of selections with the gearbox or try them all.

After you try the feeds which are engaged by the star wheel on the carriage adjacent to the hand wheel that moves the carriage to wards the Headstock/Tailstock and the Knurled selector lever which has position Surfacing and Sliding ( towards the chuck along the bed and towards the centre of the machine) try the Half nuts, these are used for Screw cutting ( the feed direction selector will have to be in the middle Neutral for the Half nuts to engage.),at this point before engaging the half nuts you would be advised to reduce the spindle RPM as the faster the spindle is rotateing the faster the carriage will move towards the spindle when the half nuts are engaged.

If all this works ok ( should point out that by this stage any oil points should of all.ready been lubricated on the Carriage,Feed and Halfnuts) you could check that the Tailstock spindle moves in and out freely when the handle is rotated, there is a single oil point for the tailstock spindle/barrel ) there are oil points inside the headstock and an oil point on the rear Leadscrew carrier at the far right of the lathe that needs to be oiled.

Also some type of lube, either oil or chain or gear lube should be applied to the Change gears behind the left hand cover on the lathe.
