New member, new lathe
Hey just joined up here. Was refered here from another forum. I just purchased a Hercus 9" lathe today, and excited to get going with it, and want to learn more about my lathe.
Here are a couple of pics.

Parissw,
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your recent aquisition. Looks as though someone has gone to a lot of trouble to restore it to it's former glory.
Please let Bitza500, on this forum, have the details of your lathe for the records. Under the Hercus section, scroll down to "A Hercus owner's register" and if you wish, enter your details there. Such things as serial number and accessories are good to record.
Good luck and well done,
Ken

wow Canada i think someone else on this board has a Hercus in Canada apparently we exported a fair few oh and yours looks so shiny did you re paint it?
i may be wrong but here and in England we don't normally have a T slot in the compound slide i don't know why buts its more of an American thing im wondering if your compound slide is a replacement from a Southbend? or it could be very possible that Hercus did make the T slot compound slide for the export market maybe some more knowledgeable people maybe able to elaborate
very interesting to see thank you very much for showinghappy turning

I'm not so sure about that, Patrick. My '46 has a T slot, although my later 260 has a stud for a 4 way toolpost. What is less usual here is the manner of mounting the motor and countershaft. In Australia we usually see the type that is more upright and I guess is more compact in plan view. A Hercus option, the horizontal type looks more like what's fitted to South Bend. It probably takes up more space, but visually looks lower and smaller from the front anyway.

new_guy90,
I would think that all 9" Hercus lathes had t-slots in the compound slide, mine has, stock standard.
If it weren't for the t-slot, there would not be a way of fixing the lantern style tool post which slides in.
If not a t-slot, what was the other option?

Hi from PG, BC
Hi there, That looks like a twin to one of my 9". I have one that has the identical stand, would be interesting to know more about yours and where it came from. I wonder how close the Serial #'s are.
alRemember if the ID exceeds the OD the hole will be on the outside!

its correct term over here is compound slide i suppose because it an move to any angle the cross slide is fixed at 90 across the bed

interesting have you guys also noticed that the larger import machines in the USA have the T slot and over here we use the stud
in the Hercus catalog they did offer both vertical and horizontal drive units and from the pictures in the catalog it looks original except for a nob on the belt cover you can see the hole for it in Parrisw's second attachment hey thats a project you got any good sized brass?happy turning

Got no stock to machine yet. Funny I was thinking the same thing for my first project, was to make a knob for that belt cover!! I was thinking of using Alu, but maybe brass too! How should I do it? Just a friction fit through the hole? My second project I think will be a nice Aluminum Tamper for my Espresso machine.
