Indexing the Spindle (Part One)

A few months back Jörg @joerg_toolmaker posted photos of a wonderful spindle indexing attachment he had made for his little Schaublin 70 lathe and it got me thinking about making something similar for my lathe. Whilst I don't have a Schaublin lathe I do have a spare 60 division indexing plate belonging to the 13's simple dividing head and a while ago I made a keyed sleeve enabling the plate to fit the spindle of a Hercus milling slide's indexer.

After contemplating then abandoning the idea of mounting the plate on an expanding mandrel that would fit inside the lathe's spindle, I decided to make a sleeve that would 'hopefully' be a good sliding fit over the 1.300" diameter gear and the 1.0625" plain end of the spindle. I managed to achieve that fit by mounting the piece of 2" diameter 1020 in a 4" four jaw 3 Morse arbored chuck which allowed for easy removal, checking for fit and reinstallation in the lathe's spindle. Not something done quite as readily with a screw on chuck.

The sleeve features a key cut with a 16DP 14 1/2PA cutter , the closest thing I had to the 18DP Hercus used on the spindle. I fiddled around a bit to obtain a reasonable fit and realised that a concave cutter would have produced a better fit. The sleeve is locked in place with a brass nosed 1/4" BSW socket screw.

The outboard end of the sleeve is threaded 1 1/16 x 18 BSW to suit the knurled lock nut I made previously for the milling attachment indexer. It is also keyed the suit both the Hercus/Schaublin sleeve and the 24 position Hercus indexing plate.

I think my biggest challenge was the key. 7.2mm long, 4.5mm high and 3.5mm wide stepped down to 3.18mm where it projected from its slot. And then the rounded ends.

Part Two will be the Indexing Pawl or Lever. More fun and games !!
