Live Centre and Drill Chuck problems
I recently bought a live centre and a 13mm 'jacobs' chuck, both MT2 to fit my Hercus tail stock. One bought from Carbatec, one bought from Hare & Forbes.
Foolishly, I thought all MT2 shafts were equal. Well, just so happens that the shafts of both are too short, meaning winding the tail stock thing all the way in doesn't nudge the tools out as it does with all my dead centres that came with the lathe.
I now have to resort to wrapping them in cloth and bashing them out with a block of wood. Today, the live centre got so jammed in I had to take out the entire slide and feed a steel rod up inside the tap it on the cement floor.
Think I'll have to try and extend the shafts somehow, or else buy another couple of hopefully longer-shanked tools.

mine does that too ....model c....I use a soft faced hammer to remove .. it has worked so far i even changed the sleeve to a newer one and didnt make any difference so i think its the way they make the morse tapers .. keep m short it saves 5 cents worth of steel

Well, I'm glad to hear it's not just me then. I was thinking of brazing an extra length on. Fortunately, the MT2 shank 17mm drill I bought last week is long enough to be nudged out.

One thing you can try that wont involve to much effort is to ,
Insert your Taper Shank Drill into you Tail Stock, Note how far the Drill goes into the Quill(mark it),remove and measure the length from the mark to the End of the Drill Tang.
Compare this to the Tools you want to use,(this distance will be the amount you are short in being able to eject by).
Make a suitable extension up to suit your Tooling and either use Silastic or similar to attach to the End of your Tooling,This should then allow the Tools to be ejected in the normal manner.

Go get a 10mm nut and if you got a welder, place the nut on the tang where it's too short, now just weld a dob into the threaded area of the nut so the nut sticks to the tang.
Try it out in the tailstock, if required, go use the grinder till it fits to how you want it too.
Problemo SOLVERED.

Hi,
If the taper end has a thread in it you can machine up an extension that will screw into the thread.
This will give you the additional length that you require.
Saves welding, glueing and is more professional.
Look at it as a small project.
I have done this to my live centre that was purcased on ebay, it works and looks great.

I have same problem. I wind the tailstock out until I can rest a steel rule between back edge of revolving centre and the tailstock cone. I then unwind the tail stock, the steel ruler stops the revolving centre being drawn in and thuse causes it to eject using the tailstock screw as the "power source". This solution no good for non-revolving centre however.
