Hercus sell a small book that covers basic maintanence,I think they may also have a CD.
What in particular do you need to know.
Apart from the apperance of the Headstock and the centre height they are virtually a 9"AM.
You should be able to either find a Manual for the 9" hercus or a Southbend that will give a fair amount of information.
The Southbend book will more than likely only cover Imperial machines.
You could even down load the TEXT BOOK OF TURNING,which was put out by Hercus,if you do a search here you should find a link to a download.Last edited by pipeclay; 30th June 2011 at 07:54 AM. Reason: correction

I bought a CD "260 series metal lathe" from Hercus on eBay. It contains the genuine Hercus videos on how to oprate/maintain the 260 lathe. Cost was $29.50 with postage. It is a poor quality video (obviously rather old copied from VHS), and it is very basic information.
Also fom Hercus on eBay you can buy for $ 20 the "260 Lathe spare parts manual".
And they also sell a "260 Lathe maintenance manual", as 24 fotocopy pages. This I can higly recommend you get. It shows in many sectional cut drawings how the key components are assembled (extremely helpful as it shows where not so obvious pins or setscrews may hide), there are even plans to make a spindle puller tool, there is some text on how to replace parts, and an electrical wiring.
I think Hercus does from time to time list these items on ebay, but you can certainly call them and ask to send directly. I think phone is 083465522, fax 83465811.
Highly recommended is also a copy of the "Hercus Textbook of Turning". It originilly came with every 9x and 260 lathe. I think it can be found online for download.
There is also a "department of the army technical manual" (the US army that is) with lots of info including detailed parts lists and maintenance instructions for the Southbend 9" lathes. The manual is TM 9-3416-235-14&P. I found it whilst researching the internet for free download, forgot where exactly. Do some Googling and you will find it. Many parts of a 260 (like the apron) are identical, after all hercus lathes were official licenses of South Bend lathes. Some later Australian built 260's were even sold in the USA by Southbend itself as the "South Bend GS26 Bench Top Lathe, 10" Belt Drive", apparently only during a short time when they could not meet domestic demand. I found a GS26 brochure on the net, and it looks indeed exactly like a long bed 260 but on a different stand.

I have pdf versions of the 260 spare parts and maintenance manuals if you want me to email them to you. I also have the 1970 version of the Hercus Textbook Of Turning in PDF. It only covers the 9" lathe. I recently bought a hard copy of the 1989 version of the Textbook Of Turning which covers the 260 and has an extra 50 pages of info.

Hey Jack,
I've recently acquired a Hercus 260 from a family member but unfortunately it has no paperwork to go with it. If you still have the pdf copy of the maintenance manual it would be much appreciated if you could email it to [email protected] and hopefully I can begin getting this thing back in action.
Cheers.

Operations & Maintenance Manual for Hercus 9C - 1942 vintage
I recently acquired a 1942 vintage Hercus 9c (Serial # VB367) and am looking for an orginal or reproduction 'Operations & Maintenance Manual' for this lathe.
Would be great to hear if there are any around.

manual
Hello John,
I doubt you will find anything directly for that earlier model. The "South Bend 9 restoration manual by Ilion" and the "first or second edition of "the textbook of turning by p.f.hercus" are probably your best bet. There is a download available online for the second edition TBoT and the other is still available on ebay or in Australia through AMH (see links below). Most things in the South Bend manual closely reflect the Hercus 9 quite well and are quite detailed as to method. The later Hercus obviously has a different countershaft and motor assembly which is not covered by the Ilion publication.
regards Mal
