Default Milling bits that came with 9" model A

    Hello,

These milling bits came with my 9" model A lathe.

I suspect that they may not be appropriate to use with this lathe and that really, they have been hanging around with the lathe during its 50 year life hoping that one day they would meet a milling machine.

I can put the 2MT (with sleeve) and the 3 MT bits into the headstock - but am reluctant to do so as I have read about milling bits "walking out" of the morse tapers and am reluctant to stick them in the headstock to see what happens without first asking you folk for a reality check. I get the impression that special chuck holders are required to use the lathe to mill things.

Most of them have flat bottoms but two have quite jagged bases with very ' 3d ' teeth - see photos

Have seen this video - Milling on a 9" Hercus Lathe - YouTube

Have read this book - Tubal Cain Milling on the Lathe Milling Operations IN THE Lathe Workshop Practice Series Book 5 NEW Tubal Cain | eBay

Have read this thread - https://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/er...re-buy-135729/ but dont quite understand it - havent yet got the skills and experience.

Any particularly good web sites / threads / books / videos I should digest to better understand this topic ?

The milling bits I saw on the McJings stand were tiny compared to what I have got.

Will have another look at Hercus TOT to see if it says anything. Will get the Workshop Practice Milling book by Harold Hall out of the library again.

    Regards

    Bill

    Hi Bill,

Pretty sure most of the items you've shown are reamers of the non-adjustable type. The big long one titled "what is it" definitely is, most of the other ones are as well but looks like they have been worn/grind down or where for a specific job. Do a search at a tool supplier for end mill. Try moyles.com.au or even blackwoods for a sutton kit to see an example of what you would probably use on a lathe.

    Default Thanks Ben

    Thanks Ben,

Have googled reamers and also end mills and things are making a bit more sense now.

Am now seeing images of things that look almost the same as what came with the lathe.

Couldnt understand why I wasnt seeing things that looked like mine in the books and on the internet when I was googling milling topics.

    Have got lots to learn.

    Bill
