Another Model B to add to the register
Hi all,
I've just found this forum and hopr to learn a lot from it because I basically know nothing about metalwork - other than what I did for a short while in high school more years a go than I care to remember. I've bought myself a Hercus Model B (machine #7925) for $600. it came with both metric and imperial gears, as I understand it. Ex-Teacher's machine from the education system, so I'm told. First thing I need to do is get a decent tool holder, apparently. Mine has the old semi-circular spacer thingy that enables one to adjust it, but I'm looking for one of the more contemporary quick-change type ones that everyone else seems to have. I'd also like to get buy one of those diamond tool holder setups but obviously I don't want to do that until I have my tool holder set up properly. Please can anyone point me to where I can get the bed & holder I need for my model (i.e. so it just slides in to replace the one that came with it)?
Many thanks,
Kim.

I got mine from CDCO in the US, but actually Mal's prices are pretty good for the QCTP. I'm not sure how much his additional tool holders are; but I just got a bunch with my order from CDCO, but again all up it was the best part of $300 with a 8 additional holders.
You will have to mill up the T-nut that comes with the QCTP (they come with a generic square block) to suit your compound on your lathe, or again Mal has ones ready to go to suit the Hercus if you dont want to make your own or have the tools necessary.
The quality of the CDCO QCTP is Ok, its certainly not amazing but for the price I guess it works ok and is alot cheaper than the Aloris etc.
They are worth the money though. I think I'd go crazy if I only had the lantern tool post, and even the 4 way (which is rarely more than 2 tools) is pretty limited and setting tool height is a PITA.
Hope it helps.
