9" Imperial Gearbox assembley photos
With the discussions on gearbox problems, I thought these shots might be of use for assembly.
I have divided the work into 3 sections: Cone shaft, Drive shaft and tumbler shaft.
First is the layout of the components:

Cone shaft assembly
1. Cone shaft assembly.
Straight forward to replace, just requires some gentle tapping sometimes with a soft face hammer to fit the fixed gears.
Be careful to line up the taper pin position, after a bad experience, I now drill out the taper and replace with a roll pin.
Remember to fit the felt insert.

2. Drive shaft assembly.

Tumbler shaft assembly
3. Tumbler shaft assembly.
Again this uses a taper pin, simply to retain the shaft from sliding out. As it is not under any shear load, replace as always with restraint.

BH,
Your photos of the gearbox, are fantastic. You have prompted me to think about fully stripping mine right down. At this stage I have the tumbler shaft and arms out and was just going to strip the outside of the casting. The inside paintwork is in good nick.
Well done,
Ken

BH,
One more question, did you remove the flip top oiler ? If yes, is it just a tap in fit?

Thanks Neks,
It is not a big deal to strip the gearbox, good idea to remove grit etc.
The biggest problem I experienced, was when the tapered pin through the gear and cone shaft refused to move. I had to remove the front plate and bore a hole through the front housing to get a drift to the pin over a support. Hence the preference for using a roll pin.
I have also replaced the shaft bushes, they are a standard imperial size available from bearing suppliers.
The oilers are not tapped in, they have a slight taper and are just knocked in. Gently tap from each side to remove.
Have fun,
Peter
