Thread: Norton gearbox disassembly?

as mentioned earlier, the pin in my gearbox appears to be parallel according to my verniers. The pin I extracted is buggered, so I intend to replace it with a piece of bright ms wire, 3.18mm dia. or brass.

Can anyone see a problem with this?

You might consider using a 1/8 inch diameter roll pin.

When I went thu mine (made some new gears) it definitely has taper pins, but perhaps they did a few different things with the pins over the years......
Still I would check the holes both sides in case someone just managed to put in the wrong pin as it's quite common for people not in the trade to not know about taper pins.

Hi Ken, when I stripped my gearbox down the pin??? was noting but a piece of fine round?? steel

I being the handy person I am have a supply of nails and did find a 2" flathead nail cut to length to be a pretty good replacement

My gearbox pin was not visible and had me stumped but with the flat head nail it is easy to see as well as good to use to peen the other end of the nail over as mine was

Did anybody else find that pin had been peened over causing nothing but a nightmare ???

But then again it is not a everyday job stripping down a gearbox ,The other good bit using the flathead nail meant you did not hit the casting as mine had a few hammer marks as the old pin was a very solid fit

Well have fun painting as it is off to the Hospital AGAIN for a refit

OK, the hole thru the boss in the gearbox is a tapered hole, and wanting to do the right thing, the new pin I install should also be tapered. You have all told me, and I now agree.

Buggered if I can find a spec sheet that shows the dimensions of tapered pins. I reckon I'm gunna need a pin that's about 3.2mm at the big end, and a tad smaller at the other with a length of 32mm or 1.25".

Do you have a spec sheet showing imperial dimensions, and where in Melbourne are they available?

If memory serves me right they are #1 taper pins. When I replaced mine I had to seat them in the tapered holes mark them (a bit long on the big end) then remove and trim the ends. they will all fit differently depending how deep they went with the tapered reamer. I bought a small kit with a selection of different sizes from a local industrial supplier so they should be readily available down there. Although u guys being down under the big end may be on the other end down there....lol
A while ago I bought some Hercus parts from a place called Newmac which is just up the road from Bitza's house, these guys prolly will have taper pins or can tell u where to get them in oz.

The books tell me that there are 2 types of taper pins - metric (1:50) and imperial (1:48).
For Hercus being Australian this could be tricky to identify, having changed over to metric.
That probably only affects the Model 260, earlier 9" I think would be all imperial.
