Default Norton gearbox, remove gear data plate?

One would have thought that the brass rivets holding the gear data plate on, would have gone right through the casting. Not so. The holes for the rivets are blind, so they can't be tapped out from inside the gearbox.

How on earth am I going to remove these rivets? If I have to destroy them, that's fine, I'll just make or buy some new ones.

I really want to remove this brass plate, so I can clean it up separately.

    Any clues?

    Ken

The Pins are U drive pins they have a radial raised section around there OD.
The tip of the pin the bit that goes into the hole is the drill size you will need to drill if you replace with same.
Remove as mob advised, you maybe able to lever them slightly so as to get a bit more grip with pliers or similar.
If you cant get the out you will have to chisel them off,you can then try and drill the remainder out,if not drill them next pin size up,you will then have to enlarge the plate holes to suit.

    G'day Ken,
These spiral dive pins can be a real pain in the bum. You need to be careful as they are usually hardened, can break easily and are dificult to drill through.
I have managed to get them out by using a trick I found on the practical machinist forum but I can't seem to find the original post to refer you too.
The technique uses a set of toenail clippers (the big ones but don't use your cooks or she won't be happy). Get a good bite onto the head of the pin and gently wiggle it clockwise and anti-clockwise a few times to loosen it a bit then turn it anti-clockwise while pulling on it and if you are lucky it should come out. The pin will rotate about half a turn before it comes out. The toenail clippers are better than side cutters because the jaws are parallel.
I have had about a 50% success ratio with this on small pins so see how you go.
    Cheers,
    Greg.

    Thanks Pipeclay, Mob & Greg,

I have managed to extract one rivet, the remaining three are being stubborn.

Where can I buy new drive rivets, had a squize on Google for somewhere local, without success.

They are steel with a spiral stem and mushroom head.

Update, managed to extract all 4 pins.

With the gear data plate off, any clues on cleaning? The raised brass areas are tarnished. Is there a chemical way to restore the sheen without attacking the paintwork.

    Questions, questions, questions.

    Default Gearbox gear plate

Hi Ken, I have some of those rivets new but are stainless steel and not brass or may just be plated as the were to suit the Sheraton lathes
If you strike trouble let me know in about 2 weeks after my op on Thursday

    all the best Derek
