Default Removing the worm drive from a power feed apron

    Hi All,

I decided that since I had the apron off my 260 ATM (to remove the gearbox for repair) it would be a good opportunity to dismantle, clean and oil it. All was going well until it was time to remove the power-feed worm drive. There is a threaded collar that holds the worm gear in place. A pin passes through both, preventing the collar from coming undone. It also locates a key on the inside of the worm (this key picks up the drive from the keyway in the leadscrew). This pin is my problem. You should be able to see it at about the centre of the attached pic. It was domed over, like a rivet, in a mushroom shape. I ground the head off then tried to knock it out with a pin-punch (from the outside then inside) without success. I’m thinking know that it may have a countersink under the riveted end and a small step in the other. Do any of you guys that have dismantled these aprons have some advice on how to remove it?

Why is it that the smallest part is often the biggest problem?

Try using the key you've removed, and a small G-clamp, and a small square drive socket. The fixed jaw of the G-clamp has to be small enough to fit inside the worm drive's hole. The key is placed under the fixed jaw, and allows the pin to be pushed outwards as the key goes into the slot - avoiding the hole in the key of course. The socket is placed on the movable jaw of the G-clamp, to provide clearance for the pin when it gets pushed out.

Many thanks Jordan, your suggestion worked a treat. It appears that the pin is slightly tapered. After requiring a lot of force initially, to get it on the move, it came out quite easily.

This forum certainly is a great resource.
