Separating tail stock
Hi all, I'm in the process of aligning my tail stock. It is a little low of centre and needs to be shimmed up. I was told the way to do that is to shim between the two sections (where the top part slides back and forth when adjusting the alignment screws) but as yet I can't seem to work out how to separate the two parts. Can anyone shed some light on this. At the moment I've placed the shims (three) on the bottom between the stock and the bed - one shim on the front flat and two on the rear v bed.
Cheers,
David

Hi David,
There is no mystery to separating the top & bottom sections of the tail stock. Remove the tail stock from the lathe, and back out the sideways jacking screws. It's my bet that the castings have glued themselves together with gunk. Gently drive a wedge in between the two parts, and they should separate.
Attached is a break down of the tail stock castings.

Hi Ken,
Thanks very much for the reply and photograph. I had taken out the screws but the thing wouldn't budge so I guess you're right about it being gunked up. I'll have another crack at it tonight.
Cheers,
