Spindle taper size
I am having problems with the taper in the headstock spindle of the Hercus 12"x40"
A no 5 morse is too big and a no 4 morse too small It seems to be something in between. Am now wondering if its a morse at all Any help appreciated.

It maybe a 4 1/2.
Are you able to get calipers in to gauage bore sizes for a comparison check?

Tom,
Have a look at the scanned McPhersons catalogue pages in JohnAXA's initial post here.

As RC later states, that lathe had a Jarno taper.

Thanks A B
I will purchase a 3-5 morse sleeve and machine it down to (no 16 Jarno size) the dimensions which I think I've got on a chart somewhere Otherwise as pipeclay suggested I will measure with caliper and then hope that sleeve is soft enough to machine.

I have a LAM BH-350 which has a 4.5 morse taper headstock taper. I have original manual to confirm. I had never heard of such a thing.. But apparently it exists. I was supplied with an adaptor M4.5 to M2, but to find additional adaptors is apparently difficult. These are not commercially available as far as I am aware. Maybe these would need to be machined by owner?? I understand that the '4.5' refers to the larger end of a #4 morse. I would be interested if anyone could enlighten me.

I made a 4.5 Morse taper many years ago.
I bought a MT5 to MT3 adapter, put a MT3 dead centre in it and machined it between centres, Worked out OK.
Morse taper table attached (I hope).
Cheers,
Findlay.
