A couple of years ago I got a bit enthusiastic when I slid the tailstock back after drilling a hole. The tailstock came to rest partially overhanging the end of the bed. Poor technique on my part, but as insurance against a disaster I added a "safety stop". There was already a 5/16" UNC hole in the bed casting which was nice. I don't know what Hercus intended for that hole, but initially I just screwed a 3" long 5/16 bolt in there. Later I made a bumper. The rubber ring is off a cheap doorstop from Bunnings. It's easy to remove by hand if I need the extra length between centres.
