    Default tailstock centre

will this set up help get my tailstock lined up as pic shows the dial indicator held in the chuck running around a centrepoint maybe it would be better using a arbor from a drill chuck

Are you trying to align the Tailstock on centre to the lathe spindle.

yes pipeclay that was the aim and after i read the book again heres the results ......
with the dial indicator i adjusted the tailstock side ways to give as close a reading horizontally as i could ( .003variation from side to side)). then i found an old dumbell handle and chucked it up and made a centre hole on the opposite end for the live end. turned the 2 collars till thyey were running straight then a very fine pass once more voila the old moore n wright
said the 2 collars were with in .002 was it a fluke

Maybe not but do your test between centres and see if you get a similar result.

whack a bit of stock into the chuck and turn a small inverted vee in the centre of the stock , run your tail stock up and set the point of the center to the vee , making your adjustments till the centre is spot on to the turned vee , works for me, quick and easy without the problem of setting up a dial gauge espically where clearance is a problem
