What was the end result of your little TPG adventure Bob? Did you get the surface finish sorted?

Unfortunately Pete, that project remains unfinished. I think that in my parting post, I said I would procure a fresh pair of motor bearings in an attempt to rule out motor vibration as a source of chatter. I covered the lathe with a sheet and moved on to more exciting stuff. Now that you have mentioned it, I will have a look at buying some bearings tomorrow.

Bob (and others with a taper turning attachment), have you used the attachment very often? It's obviously a significant expense, as much as the complete lathe, so probably not something to buy for the heck.

The truth is Pete I've only used it a couple of times. I guess if it was permanently set up on the lathe I might be tempted to use it more often. The extended cross slide with the rear tool post is my favoured setup. The last taper I machined was, funny enough, the locking handle for the TTA. I used the compound slide.
Some of these accessories are nice to have but you can throw a lot of money at something you might only use once or twice. I have the vertical milling attachment with it's vise and indexer. The indexer has a nose adapter and draw bar for 3C collets. All the fruit. I've used it once! But I did buy it before I had a mill.

Do you happen to have a photo of the table Bob? I think I've seen some photos of it, but can't recall. As you mention, it could be handy.

Azz,
there's another way around it. Get hold of an old compound slide. They had the degree graduations on the base and a zero mark on the cross slide.
Nice to hear from you Graeme. How's the turning progressing?

Bob, are those photos of a standard Hercus taper turning cross slide? It looks a lot like an extended cross slide. The latter would be real handy, but I thought they were 2 completely separate articles.

They are the Taper Cross slide replaces the original plain slide, the 1 pictured is the TEE slotted cross slide. It enables use of the additional attachments that came as extras with the Hercus.

Pete,
I thought you were asking about the extended slide. There are some photos of the taper slide in the "Thanks to Finno" thread. If you need more, just ask.

extended slide
I bought a new extended slide off someone on this site a while back(can't remember who it was but thanks it was in mint nick and very good price) I've left it on the lathe and it comes in handy quite often.
Edit: I bought it from Bugsy63....thanks Michael it's come in very handy.
