    Default Tool Holders

These tool holders came with the new lathe and are a bit unusual. I am not sure whether the one on the wood block was for show and tell but I don't see a use for it like that.Even off the block I can't work out what the adjuster would be for. Maybe someone here can help me out with its use.
The Three Way toolholder is a bit of a curiosity as well.At least it looks like it will go on and be of use.
They are both very nicely built and machined. The old owner used to get parts cast in West End , Brisbane for some of his work and there are more home made bits that have come with the lathe. I wish I could have bought it direct and had a workshop tour at his place.

    Hi,

The first few pictures appear to be a quick retracting toolpost for thread cutting.

(I assume that the rotary handle retracts the toolholder )

This is particularly applicable to cutting threads where the half nuts need to be continually engaged when, for example, cutting metric threads on an imperial lathe or imperial threads on a metric lathe.

Rotating the handle should quickly retract the threading tool clear of any obstacles such as collars or screw heads allowing time to stop the lathe and reverse the leadscrew.

(Total reversal method of screw cutting)

(See Martin Cleeve's book on threadcutting "Screwcutting in the lathe" Workshop practice series # 3
    and
Thomas, George "The Model Engineers Workshop Manual" P116
for an example of a similar toolpost)

Thanks David. The book is already on the way .
That could be done with the cross slide thread and stop which I have as well.I suppose it is one of those things to try and find the best method.

The triangular thing is a David Lammas toolpost. I have seen it first sometime in the mid 80's in Model Engineer. They did later sell castings for it. The advantage over a 4-way toolpost is, that the tips of the unused tools are less likely to interfere with the operators skin or the tailstock or the workpiece. Google "David Lammas Toolpost" for more info. Chris

I really like the way how a ring spanner was converted into an adjustable lever. Can you make a picture that shows from below how the mushroom handle has been attached to the ring spanner?

Ring spanners can be bought on sale for as little as $1, whereas a real solid metal ajustable lever handle costs not under $20 plus shipping. I think it would pay off to make your own.

Chris, The nut would be a connector nut turned down at the top for the spring and clearance for the spanner.Third photo shows a washer above the spring. When I looked at the other handle it had 2 washers there so I moved on onto this handle to help contain the spring.Knob is held on with a small nut and bolt.Might have been easier than threading the spanner handle.

    Michael
Looks like everything is being set up well with your lathe.
Hope you did not experience too much water in the area where you live.
    regards
    Bruce
