    Default Unknown Hercus 14x40 Lathe

While browsing, I came across this pdf file dealing with McPherson's involvement with our Hercus lathes... Interesting

    Hello John,

I knew I had a photo of the 14'' Hercus. I had to remember where it was hidden. This may have been a photo posted for an Ebay auction several years ago. I actually saw a much older, overhead countershaft version of the lathe maybe 7 years ago and took some poor photos of it. I'll have a look for them.

Found them. This was actually a 12inch swing lathe. You can see the 12 cast into the bed foot in the second last photo. McPhersons had this lathe illustrated in their 1951 catalogue. I photographed it in 2003. It was for sale at Ron Mack Machinery over here for $1000.

    AB, your photography is remarkable.

Who takes your photos for you, a machinery photographic studio, says he tongue in cheek?

    Default 14x40

Hello Bob. Thanks for the photo's... I had no idea that Hercus produced a lathe like the 14x40. Sure would like to have one under the house, beside the 9" ARM... I used to go to McPhersons down the Valley in Brisbane, not far from where I worked as a woodturner, never dreaming I would ever have a metal lathe. That was about 40 odd years ago. I had bought the Hercus "Text Book of Turning" 1964 edition/green cover and found it again after buying the 9" some time ago, and have been having fun ever since.

It was supposedly a clone of a US lathe, down to the Jarno taper in the headstock...

Just like Sheraton lathes were clones of LeBlond Regal lathes...
