Thanks for sending me the wooden gear clock info. Maybe I can actually make this thing! It really is a beautiful clock. Once I lay my hands on the Baltic birch plywood or something similar, it'll be full steam ahead (I hope).

Thanks for your offer and the info about that clock site. I had already downloaded the plans for those clocks. I was actually put off by how complicated they were. But I can see that is because the plans have been well done, very thorough drawings. I need my hand to be held though. For a first clock project, I need step by step instructions. I have studied the Spring 2007 clock and I think I can do it.

I just wish all these wooden gear clocks were smaller though. Juvy, you seem to have collected an assortment of clock info, have you made a wooden gear clock?

No Yeebla, I have never attempted to make a wooden gear clock. I just collect a lot of stuff......

There is a reason I didn't start one tho.... I had thought about it, but dropped the idea once I looked into it.
Seems that all the plans call for the very best ply wood you can get.... which over here is hard to find and expensive. Making them with regular timber is discouraged because these gears have to stay precisly the way they are cut... if anything changes due to humidity or movement in the wood the clocks won't work anymore. Right there I lost a lot of interest because I had pictured one made from Australian woods.
Since then I've seen how badly thin redgum can twist and turn.... so that's definately out.

Think I'll stick with musicboxes and toys ! lol

I saw a plan once from someone in Aus that made his own plywood using veneers. I am guessing that would be expensive compared to buying ply, but think of the possibilities in terms of species availability.

Yeebla, Come for a drive down to Geelong on the 1st or 2nd of November
to the Barwon Valley Woodwrights expo ,at the State Goverement Offices on the corner of Little Malop and Fenwick Streets.
The clock I made just on three years ago,still ticking away,will be on show.
The gears(wheels)are all out of solid timber,not laminated or segemented of a local timber from the Otways.
I'll be there both days ,ask one of our members ,you will soon find me.

Juvy,
I know what you mean about plywood apparently being the holy grail for gears. It still might expand, but at least the same amount in all directions, retaining its circular shape. A place called Marine Timbers in Seaford, Melbourne used to stock birch ply but not any more. It is very disheartening. General plywood merchants don't stock it. One said that hoop ply is our equivalent of birch, but I don't know enough to know whether it is suitable for clock gears.

that is an interesting suggestion about making one's own ply, but it is beyond my capabilities.

I'm really glad you wrote. I think I've read all your past clock posts in the last few days. That timber of yours, satinwood, I believe, sounds as though you were lucky to get it. If that is the case, then what timber would you use that is readily available? I'll keep the BVW expo in Geelong in mind. I lived in Torquay for four years in the late 70's and haven't been in Geelong for about 10 years.

Thanks Keju but i see this page and it´s include the pattern only and i need the instruction to assembly the gears and parts of this clocks and the magazine can´t buy because is exhaust. In first reply of this post Mike was offered to send a copy to him of the article to be able to make the clock and this´s as i want.

Did you say you already cut the clock from the pattern you got from that web page?
There is a note on it saying not to use it as pattern, because you would have to enlarge it and that could cause distortion.

They did include a new, corrected full size pattern with the next issue if I remember right.

Also.... both issues are still available directly from Fox Chapel.
