Thread: Best butterfly project

my preference is without background.

Good morning Mature One. I am about to start making the butterfly pattern. Although I will use a combination of ply and MDF for my first one I will later use melamine ( that is when I can get Bunnings due to virus lock down) I can't quite make out if you have used melamine of not. If you did use melamine what sort of glue did you use?

I use glue - "88" of Ukrainian production (instruction: apply glue on both surfaces, wait about 10-15 minutes until the glue dries, squeeze the glued surfaces). Someone wrote that similar glue calls "Contact Cement", also I know that some of my customers use "Gorilla" wood glue.

Thank you Alex. I have been looking around and the glue jumping out at me is welbond. The information I am getting is that it's a good general purpose glue and should give me freedom to move the pattern so it positioned properly. I hope

welbond is my go to glue for general glues ,I also have specific glue for melamine called AV 180 which looks like welbond, that is its liquid but it is made for melamine glueups. Can't remember where I got it from originally.

It seems to be difficult to get a glue that will work on melamine except for those glues that bite on contact. They wont let you adjust the pieces. I have bought a small tube of weldbond but haven't used it yet. I hope it will do the job.

I did do an experimental piece of melamine on an ordinary piece of wood using Sellys PVC indoor glue. It seemed to work but I'm not confident with it hense the search for something else.

Good morning. I have been working with melamine and using weldbond glue to join two layers. My first attempt was just applying the weldbond to to both surfaces. It wasn't successful. I made two more attempts. The first sanding the gloss melamine heavely and the next just giving it a light rub. Both have bee very successful. when I prized the the layers apart it tore the backing board but the the actual melamine held.

Weldbond seems to be the go. I hope this will be of some help

Slightly off topic
We would use AV 56 glue for putting together Melamine carcases in the kitchen game. It is a latex glue (I think) and is applied as you would use PVA. It is water soluble and cleans up easily. When the glue has dried it will pull the Melamine coating off before the joint comes apart. If you were to drop into your local Kitchen Cupboard manufacturer I am sure they would sell some to you. Its not cheap at $35 per litre but is works really well

AV 180 is mostly used to join MDF and Pyneboard. PVA will not stick to the impervious Melamine surface

Thanks for the glue information. I have bought the weldbond and so will stay with it. Now that I have made the welcome sign using melamine I am not all that wrapped up in it and think I will go to ply and that will take me to ordinary PVC glue
