Compound cutting
Hi everyone
Does anyone have a trick to keep small compound cutting exercises together during cutting?
Most books suggest you tape them before you 'turn the corner' but we have had failures like the carnival horse below which has malformed legs because the block moved during cutting.
Regards

Try getting two pieces of timber longer than the item you wish to cut but about the same thikness as what you are working on, drill holes in each end of these pieces and use a couple of thing bolts with wingnuts in these holes and they should hold your work together. hope this helps. If I had the means I would draw them for you

A couple of dabs of hot-melt glue will do the job, although it takes a bit of thought to place them so that they're in positions that won't be removed before finishing the cuts and won't need some cleaning up afterwards.
The former is important, the latter is more a matter of convenience.
If, when you finish a cut, the waste is still glued to the body of the piece then you can throw it into the freezer for a while, before giving the waste a sharp tap. (This is a handy wood-turner's trick. )
Heating also works, BTW, but leaves a bigger mess to clean up.

I go with the Fly....... a friend made me a couple of these clamps and they work like a charm! Much better then messing with the tape!

Hi Fly, Skew Chidamm and Keju
I think the clamp idea is excellent and certainly worth a try. I'm pleased that I received confirmation on Fly's idea from you Keju. The idea is logical, and easy enough to imagine, so not too hard to build
Thanks

No need to just imagine.... went and took a photo for you
I find it's a good idea to have at least two sizes.... one for tiny stuff and one for big stuff.
They're good for other things too not just 3D cutting.... any little piece of wood is easier to cut using these clamps.

Hi Keju
Well done. Appreciate the photo. It's easy to make and David will no doubt make a couple this weekend, when he has free time again. You're right, it would be useful, not just for small compound pieces, but for a range of tasks.
Best regards
